Senior Chosen to Attend Prestigious Violent Crime Behavior Seminar

Carissa Stinson, a criminal justice and psychology double major from Perry, Ohio, has been chosen to take part in the prestigious Violent Crime Behavior training seminar in Manassas, Va., from June 8-19.

The seminar is presented by the Academy Group Inc., a forensic behavioral science company that helps local and federal agencies with consulting, training, research and investigation. Former FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood, whose work in behavior profiling helped to establish the FBI Behavioral Science Unit (BSU) at Quantico, Va., will conduct the seminar.

ONU Student Honored by U.S. Department of Energy

Ohio Northern University student Michalena Grosshans, a senior biology major from Idaho Falls, Idaho, won third place at the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science 2008 Science and Energy Research Challenge.

Grosshans garnered third place for her bioforensic methods of detecting Brucella abortus, a bacterium that causes Brucellosis in wildlife and can be used as a biowarfare agent. The prize includes a $1,000 scholarship. She participated in the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship program at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

Thirty-four Colleges to Compete in Mock Trials

More than 540 students from 13 states will compete in the third annual Polar Bear Invitational Mock Trial Tournament in the Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law Jan. 17-18.

The ONU undergraduate mock trial chapter and ONU Department of History, Politics and Justice sponsor the event.

ONU to Host Fulbright Visiting Scholar

Ohio Northern University will host Fulbright visiting scholar Juan Manuel Guerra Hernandez beginning Jan. 20.

Guerra Hernandez, an educator and dancer from Mexico, will teach at Ohio Northern through the beginning of May. He is one of approximately 800 foreign professionals who will teach and conduct research in the U.S. through the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program.

Summer Honors Institute to Continue at Ohio Northern University

An Ohio Department of Education (ODE) grant will make it possible for Ohio Northern University to host its annual Summer Honors Institute (SHI) for gifted and talented Ohio high school students. This grant marks the fifth consecutive year of the program.

Major development of potential new cancer drug revealed at ONU seminar

A potential new drug for the treatment of breast cancer was revealed in a seminar by Dr. Tara Rheault at Ohio Northern University on Dec. 3. Rheault, an oncology medical chemistry researcher with GlaxoSmithKline at Research Triangle Park in North Carolina, gave a presentation titled “Potent and Selective Inhibitors of Polo-Like Kinase (PLK1): Novel Anti-mitotic Agents for the Treatment of Cancer” to the ONU Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Psychology Students, Professor Paper to be Published

Four Ohio Northern University students and professor Keith Durkin presented the paper, "When Good Times Go Bad: The Differential Impact of Risk and Protective Factors on the Alcohol-Related Problems of a Sample of University Students," at the Mid-South Sociological Association in Huntsville, Ala.

A revised version of the paper is scheduled for publication in a forthcoming special issue of the "Journal of Offender Rehabilitation," which deals with alcohol and criminal behavior.

Students Attend GIS Day

GIS Day participantsOn Dec. 11, 2008, 29 ONU students from two sections of the Introduction to GIS (Geographic Information Systems) class attended the 2008 GIS Day at Rhodes State University in Lima, Ohio.

GIS Day is an event held annually in more than 80 countries around the world, with the hope of demonstrating to students and professionals the real-world applications of geographic information systems.

Dance Team to Host Children’s Dance Clinic

The Northern Stars, the dance team at Ohio Northern University, will conduct a dance clinic for children ages 4-18 on Saturday, Jan. 17, from noon to 2 p.m.

Children will learn dance techniques and perform a choreographed dance routine with the Northern Stars at the ONU men's varsity basketball game that afternoon at 3 p.m.
