Dr. Tena Roepke, associate professor of mathematics/education and director of the Center for Teacher Education, has been appointed chair of the Higher Education Subcommittee of Ohio's Educator Standards Board.

Professors Present Partnership South Africa at Conference

Dr. Sandra Crosser, professor of education, and Dr. Diana Garver, assistant professor of education, made a presentation titled "Partnership South Africa: Making a Global Connection" at the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education (AILACTE) annual meeting and extended conference, Feb. 5-6 in Chicago.

Chemistry Professor Awarded Research Grant

Dr. Jake Zimmerman, assistant professor of chemistry at Ohio Northern University, has received a $50,000 grant from the American Chemical Society's Petroleum Research Fund (ACS-PRF) through the Undergraduate New Investigators Program.

This funding will support a laboratory research program at ONU over the next two years. The grant money will fund summer research stipends, supplies and equipment. Zimmerman and his research team will pursue groundbreaking research that could lead to applications in the industrial world.

Ohio Northern Student Awarded Third Place in National Art Scholarship Competition

Stephanie RaderOhio Northern University senior Stephanie Rader was recently awarded third place in the prestigious Kappa Pi International Art Honorary scholarship competition.

Stephanie, who is majoring in art/art education, submitted a portfolio containing five works to a selection committee at the national office in Mississippi.

A native of Mt. Cory, Ohio, Stephanie is proud to have been chosen for the award.

Teaching English in Afghanistan

Colonel John J. Smith, West Point professor of English, will discuss "Teaching English at the Military Academy of Afghanistan and the Situation There" in the Ohio Northern University Dicke Forum on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m.

Presented by the ONU Phi Beta International Forum, the event is free and open to the public.

Study Links Burglary Reduction to Increase in Alarms Systems

Seungmug Lee, Ph.D., ONU visiting assistant professor of criminal justice, is author of a study that finds residential burglar alarm systems decrease crime. Researchers at the Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice in Newark, N.J., analyzed five years of crime data provided by the Newark Police Department.

ONU Hosts Mock Trial Invitational Tournament

Mock trialOhio Northern played host to the third-annual Polar Bear Invitational Mock Trial Tournament at the ONU Pettit College of Law Jan. 17-18. A total of 46 teams from 34 colleges and universities in 13 states participated in the tournament, with teams traveling from as far away as California, Florida and Mississippi to compete.

‘Cabaret’ Heats up ONU Stage

The Ohio Northern University Freed Center for the Performing Arts presents the Tony Award-winning musical "Cabaret." Performances begin Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m., with a pre-show discussion at 7:15 p.m. Additional performances take place Thursday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. All showings will be in the Stambaugh Studio Theatre.

O’Reilly to present ‘Unexceptional’

Marc J. O' Reilly will conduct a lecture on his new book, "Unexceptional: America's Empire in the Persian Gulf, 1941-2007," in the Ohio Northern University James F. Dicke College of Business Administration's Dicke Forum on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Sponsored by the Committee of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (CASE) of Ohio Northern University, the lecture is free and open to the public.

Dance Company Collaborates with Verb Ballets

Verb Ballets joins forces with the Ohio Northern University Dance Company for an evening of contemporary dance in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, Jan. 31. A pre-show discussion begins at 7:15 p.m., followed by the performance at 8 p.m. A second performance takes place Sunday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m.
