Ohio Lt. Gov. Fisher to Speak at Undergraduate Commencement

Lt. Gov. Lee FisherOhio Northern University will celebrate its 2009 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 24, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the Sports Center.

About 600 students will be awarded degrees.

Dr. Bates working with two students in the labDr. Susan Bates, associate professor of chemistry, didn't plan to become a teacher when she first began studying chemistry, but now she is a dedicated teacher, determined to give her students the research opportunities that she didn't have as an undergraduate.

ONU Prepares Prison Management Program for Saudi Arabian Professionals

Ohio Northern University will begin a two-year prison management certificate program this summer for prison administrators from Saudi Arabia.

Ohio Northern will offer 30 prison management professionals, who already have bachelor's degrees and training, the opportunity to study the English language and criminal justice in Ohio Northern University's Department of History, Politics and Justice.

Public Relations Student Wins at Public Speaking Competition

Callie Crum, public relations major of Cardington, Ohio, is a student who understands what it means to be determined. Having been an active member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) in high school, she had familiarized herself with all aspects of competitive public speaking, from tone inflection to choreographing hand movements and walking patterns. Upon her arrival to Ohio Northern University, she was not keen to let that interest die.

“I just have a drive to do it,” Crum says, “and I wanted to get back into competing.”

Technological Studies Teams Garner Gold, Silver at National Robotics Challenge

Ohio Northern University's Department of Technological Studies teams garnered four awards, including a gold award, at the National Robotics Challenge in Marion, Ohio, on April 17-18.

ONU sent six teams and 21 students to the competition. The team of Rob Hradek, Wooster, Ohio; Scott Nemeth, Westlake, Ohio; Courtney Johnson, Fremont, Ohio; Katie Wade, Ijamsville, Md., Jose Guzman, Lima, Ohio; and Eric Gray, North Fairfield, Ohio, won a gold award in workcell animation for its ice cream serving machine. The team also won the people's choice award and a $500 prize.

Ohio Northern University's women's health class will celebrate National Women's Health Week by hosting women's health events in the Ada and Lima communities from May 10-16.

Ohio Northern University's Fulbright Scholar in Residence Juan Manuel Guerra-Hernandez will speak on "Education in Mexico" in Dicke 137 on Tuesday, April 28, from 7-8 p.m. The presentation is sponsored by Phi Beta Delta's International Forum.

Crago Named Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs

David C. CragoDavid C. Crago, Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law dean and professor of law, has been named ONU’s interim vice president of academic affairs, effective July 1.
 
Crago, who will remain dean of the College of Law, takes on the responsibilities of the departing Dr. Anne Lippert, who announced her retirement earlier this year. Lippert, who has been with ONU since 1971, has served as vice president since 1992.

Physics Professionals to Convene at Ohio Northern

The spring 2009 joint meeting of the Ohio-region section of the American Physical Society (OS/APS) and the Southern Ohio section of the American Association of Physics Teachers will take place Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25, on the campus of Ohio Northern University.

The theme of the conference is "Plasma FUNdamentals." There will be four keynote speakers from the fields of space plasma physics, basic plasma physics, applied plasma physics and fusion physics.

ONU Celebrates the Arts

Celebration of the Arts, a demonstration of visual and written creativity, will be held at the Wishing Well in Ohio Northern University's McIntosh Center on Tuesday, April 21, at 7 p.m.

The event begins with ONU art majors displaying their projects and English majors reading some of their creative works.

Special guest Karen Craigo, Ohio poet and creative writing teacher at Bowling Green State University, will also give a reading.

The event is free and open to the public.
