Components of Clinicals: - Direct supervision by a clinical instructor
- Provide pre-practice treatment & taping with supervision
- Provide practice and game-day event coverage with supervision
- Completion of level-specific clinical proficiencies
- Feedback of performance by a mid-term and final written evaluation from your clinical instructor
- Written peer review of freshmen directed observation students
- Additional exposure to special events on campus (ex. NCAA Division III regional & national championships) as available
Clinical Experience Evaluations
- Each clinical student will receive a written mid-term and final performance evaluation by his/her clinical instructor. Each student will provide a self-evaluation of their performance at this time as well. Students will be required to sign this performance evaluation and may provide any input they feel is essential.
- Clinical students will be required to complete a clinical instructor evaluation at the conclusion of each clinical level 1-6. This evaluation should be reviewed with your clinical instructor at the conclusion of your clinical.
- Clinical students will also be required to complete a written performance evaluation on directed observation students performing sport observations. Performance evaluation forms can be found in the filing cabinet under "Student Information". Evaluations should be completed and turned in to your clinical instructor the Monday following the observation.
Successful Clinical Completion
Clinical courses 1-6 are graded on an S/U basis. A student may only be enrolled in a clinical if they have successfully completed the prerequisites as listed below. In addition to the prerequisites listed, all students must possess valid First Aid & CPR certifications in order to register for a clinical. Students must maintain valid First Aid & CPR certifications throughout their entire clinical experience. Any student who does not meet this requirement will be removed from their clinical, and will be given a "U" grade for that clinical.
Clinical Prerequisite Courses:
Clinical Level 1 (HPES-251): HPES-112; HPES-160; Admitted into the ATEP
Clinical Level 2 (HPES-252): HPES-251
Clinical Level 3 (HPES-353): HPES-252; HPES-276
Clinical Level 4 (HPES-354): HPES-353; HPES-371
Clinical Level 5 (HPES-455): HPES-354; HPES-373
Clinical Level 6 (HPES-456): HPES-455
All students must receive an "S" in their previous clinical to continue through the clinical sequence.
An "S" (Satisfactory) grade will be given by your clinical instructor after successful completion of the designated criteria listed on your course syllabus for each clinical.
A "U" (Unsuccessful) or "I" (Incomplete) grade will be given by your clinical instructor if designated criteria listed on your course syllabus are not met. Specific criteria for a "U" or "I" are provided in your Athletic Training Policies & Procedure Manual (P&P Manual) that each student receives.
- Students who receive a "U" grade may not continue to the next clinical level, and will be required to repeat the failed clinical experience during the next scheduled clinical.
- Marks of "I" are given only with the dean's approval for documented reasons generally beyond the student's control. Students who receive an "I" grade may continue to the next clinical level, but will be required, per university policy, to make up an "I" grade within the first 8 weeks of the following academic quarter. Any student who does not complete this requirement will immediately be removed from the clinical they are enrolled in and must repeat both clinicals. All clinical proficiencies associated with the incomplete clinical experience must be successfully completed before any proficiencies for the next clinical experience may be initiated.
