Estell Named IEEE Evaluator

Dr. John K. Estell, professor of computer science and computer engineering and chair of the ECCS department, has been named by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Educational Activities Board as an IEEE program evaluator for computer engineering programs seeking accreditation through the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission.

Construction Estimating Team Finishes Second in OCA Competition

The Ohio Northern University construction estimating team finished second at the 10th annual Ohio Contractors Association (OCA) Estimating Competition in Columbus, Ohio, on Feb. 26-27.

This marks the third consecutive year that estimators representing the T.J. Smull College of Engineering have placed either first or second in the state.

Reid to Speak at IEEE-USA Annual Meeting

Ken Reid, director of freshman engineering and associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been invited to speak at the IEEE-USA annual meeting, March 4-7 in Nashville, Tenn.

The theme of the annual meeting is “The Gathering Storm: Are You Engineering the Solutions?” with sessions addressing social, economic and political issues surrounding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education in grades K-12.

Pixar Animation Studios’ Bob Peterson to Speak at Ohio Northern University

Bob Peterson, award-winning director and screenwriter for Pixar Animation Studios, will be the featured speaker for the Ohio Northern University Spotts Lecture in the Sports Center Gym at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 15.

The event is free and open to the public.

ONU and AEP Take Lead on Advanced Energy Education Initiative

The Ohio Northern University T.J. Smull College of Engineering is set to lead a new educational initiative to develop and implement an advanced energy curriculum program with the support of an American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation grant. Representatives from AEP and the AEP Foundation will present the grant award to representatives from Ohio Northern University on Dec. 21 at 11:30 a.m.

ONU to Compete in IBM-sponsored Collegiate Programming Contest

Ohio Northern University engineering and computer science students will participate in the 34th annual IBM-sponsored Association for Computing Machinery International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC). ONU will send six students to the University of Cincinnati to participate in the regional competition on Oct. 31.

Tens of thousands of students from 83 countries and six continents will compete in regional competitions around the world. The top 100 teams from these regional contests will qualify to advance to the World Finals in Harbin, China, Feb. 1-5, 2010.
