Weather-Related Emergencies

Weather-related emergencies in our area can take many forms from severe thunderstorms and tornados to flooding or blizzards. To deal with these threats, ONU has a series of plans in place. General Guidelines

  1. During inclement weather pay attention to current local weather conditions reported on radio or TV.
  2. In case of a tornado, outdoor warning sirens will sound. If a tornado warning is issued, remain inside a safe area until the warning is cancelled.
  3. Do not use elevators.
  4. If evacuation is necessary, stay calm and, if possible, evacuate along the north side of the building to a safe area. Move to the lowest level in the building, or to hallways or rooms without windows in the center of the building.
  5. Do NOT go near any downed power lines.
  6. When severe weather forces the cancellation or delay of classes, announcements will be made via the ONU website, on area radio and television stations, and via text messages.
  7. When extreme cold and wind reaches a wind chill factor of -10 degrees F., shuttle buses will be provided to assist students to classes.
