Graduation Policies
Graduation is a time for celebration at Ohio Northern University. It also is a time for proper decorum and respect to be shown during the formal commencement ceremony on May 18.
Over the years the University has established several policies to ensure that family, friends and graduating seniors enjoy the ceremony while also maintaining the integrity and honor of the event. ONU reminds students that the throwing of beach balls and other objects distracts from that integrity and honor and will not be tolerated.
In addition to the established dress code, ONU will enforce its policy concerning the wearing of cords. Introduced in 2001, this policy states that the orange cord earned by honor students is the only cord that may be worn by graduating seniors. However, students are allowed to wear lapel pins that depict their departments, societies, honoraries, etc. A dress code exception will be made for ROTC students, who may wear their uniforms when receiving their diplomas.
The University also would like to reiterate that the ONU field house must be cleared following the pharmacy hooding ceremony, which commences at 10 a.m. on Sunday. After the hooding ceremony, family and friends of the graduating pharmacy students will be asked to take all their personal belongings and leave the facility so that ONU personnel can prepare for the undergraduate commencement ceremony that follows at 2 p.m. Family and friends will not be permitted to leave items or save seats.
